Town of Milton's Annual Report 1955

At the end of 1955 the Town of Milton’s Engineering Department reported in the Milton’s Annual Report.

“The year of 1955 will long be remembered by Milton residents particularly by owners of homes in either the Pine Tree Brook or the Unquity Brook areas, as the results of 15.5-inch rainfall between August 17thand August 23rd. In October, between the 14th and 17th, we had a total of 5.2 inches of rain. This was followed by 6.1 inches of rain between November 1st and November 6th. Each of these storms overtaxed the storm drains in the streets and overflowed the banks of the open waterways. The first step of the Pine Tree Brook channel improvement completed early last spring, designed to carry 500 cubic feet per second prove its necessity beyond any question since the August 1955 rains surpassed any record in the Weather Bureau’s 87-year history. The particular type of design being used in the 2.5 mile stream clearance project of Pine Tree Brook with a water shed comprising about 8 miles, will provide safety under the exceptional flood conditions which might occur once in fifty to one hundred years.”

REBUILDING THE PINE TREE BROOK 1955-1970

The Town of Milton started the most aggressive approach ever undertaken along the Pine Tree Brook from Harland Street to the Neponset River. The Engineering Reports from 1955 to 1970 outline how it was done. It would take 15 years to complete.
