Having devoted the summer to traveling the Blue Hills, one would anticipate frequent sightings of a deer; however, the only evidence of their presence was sporadic clusters of deer droppings. The woods are markedly silent, by the absence of life and the presence of an occasional squirrel. The original intent of the reservation, designed as a sanctuary for wildlife, stands in stark contrast to the current reality. In the early 19th century, the deer population was killed off from the results of excessive hunting.
